Building Safer Communities, Honoring Miya’s Legacy

The Miya Marcano Foundation (MMF) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to tenant safety, missing persons advocacy, and community protection.

Born out of unimaginable tragedy, our mission is to ensure no other family experiences the preventable loss that Miya’s family endured.

We support, educate, and empower families of missing persons while advocating for laws and programs that protect tenants — from students and single parents to seniors and the most vulnerable among us.

Our Purpose

Mission:

To honor Miya’s life by transforming grief into action — through advocacy, education, and community programs that create safer homes, safer campuses, and safer communities.

Vision:

A future where every tenant, family, and student lives in a community that is safe, secure, and accountable.

The Symbol of Transformation

Miya loved butterflies — especially in shades of royal blue. Today, the butterfly has become a symbol of her enduring spirit and the change her legacy inspires.

Our Butterfly Accreditation Program and Butterfly Gala carry her symbol forward — reminding us that transformation is always possible and that hope lives on.

Lets address your questions today!

Miya’s Law is a tenant safety law inspired by Miya’s story, passed in Florida, Virginia, and Nevada. It strengthens security measures like employee background checks and key access control for apartment communities.
It’s a certification program recognizing apartment communities that demonstrate a commitment to resident protection and safety excellence.
You can donate, volunteer, or join our advocacy movement to expand Miya’s Law nationwide and help families of missing persons.
Butterflies were Miya’s favorite — they now represent hope, rebirth, and the transformation her legacy continues to inspire.
