Miya’s Law is a tenant safety law named in honor of Miya Cecilia Marcano, a 19-year-old college student whose life was tragically taken in September 2021 when a maintenance worker abused unchecked access to her apartment.
The law was created to address the failures that led to Miya’s death — ensuring that apartment communities across the United States adopt stronger, common-sense safety measures to protect residents.

Miya’s Law was born out of tragedy — but it represents hope and accountability. It closes critical safety gaps in apartment housing by ensuring every worker with access to a home is properly vetted, every key is tracked, and every resident is respected.
Across Florida, Virginia, and Nevada, Miya’s Law has already proven that stronger safety standards save lives. Now, the mission is to make it a nationwide reality.
